Dual-Core and Software

The launch by AMD of its dual-core is a double blow in its battle with rival Intel. Hardware suppliers will be trying to use the new kit to make a dent in Dell as well, through enhanced software.

In particular, Microsoft has promised to treat dual-core servers as a single processor for licencing purposes. Only AMD enabled vendors will be able to take advantage.

Additionally the market expects Microsoft to announce 64-bit Windows operating systems for workstations and servers, next week.

Solaris, the operating system from Sun Microsystems is tuned to run on Symmetrical Multi-Processing enabled servers. To accommodate this they have developed a lot of threaded software.

Although Intel and Dell may have the edge in getting PCs to have dual-core, AMD argue that it servers are more prepared for it.
